A new study suggests that over-the-counter Nexium may be a safe option for treating heartburn, particularly in adults. (Photo Credit: iStock / Getty Images)
The researchers at New York University School of Medicine looked at over-the-counter Nexium and found it is effective for relieving symptoms such as heartburn, as well as relieving symptoms of excess acid, such as frequent heartburn, or acid reflux. While the researchers found that the medication is more effective than traditional Nexium for treating heartburn, the study found that it was not as effective for relieving heartburn symptoms.
“This was a very different kind of medication compared to other medications,” said lead study author, associate professor of medicine and family medicine at New York University School of Medicine. “It’s important to understand that this is an important area of research and to look at the potential benefits for patients with chronic conditions.”
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that over-the-counter Nexium is the best treatment option for treating heartburn, as well as relieving symptoms of excess acid, including frequent heartburn, which can lead to heart failure. The study was the first to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Nexium over-the-counter and found that it was as effective as an over-the-counter alternative medication. It also found that the drug is significantly less likely to cause long-term health problems than conventional Nexium. The researchers did not recommend Nexium for people who have a history of heartburn or a history of heartburn or other gastrointestinal problems.
The study also looked at the impact of taking Nexium at higher doses than usual. The study found that when taking Nexium at higher doses, the heartburn symptoms were significantly reduced, and those who took the drug were also less likely to suffer from heartburn.
However, the researchers said that they were not sure that Nexium was better than a different drug that would work for people with a history of heartburn. They also didn’t have enough information to make the conclusions generalizable.
“The main question is how effective is Nexium for treating heartburn and how safe is Nexium for people with a history of heartburn. We need to answer these questions at an early stage of clinical research,” said lead study author Dr. Michael T. Kockel, M. D., of New York University’s Langone Medical Center. “A more thorough study is needed to establish the efficacy of Nexium for treating heartburn.”
Teva Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, which owns AstraZeneca, have been selling a brand-name version of Nexium since 1998.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the company that developed Nexium, Nexium-RX, is currently the only drug approved for heartburn. It contains the same active ingredient as other heartburn medicines, called proton pump inhibitors. The drug works by suppressing acid production in the stomach.
“We know that proton pump inhibitors have some side effects, but it is important that people with heartburn are using this medication,” said Kockel. “This is the only medication that has been shown to be effective for the treatment of heartburn.”
Nexium works by blocking an enzyme called histamine H1 receptor and relaxing the stomach lining, reducing acid production. When people take the drug, they experience less heartburn, which can be life-threatening, Kockel said.
“People with heartburn or heartburn caused by a heartburn medication may have a higher chance of experiencing side effects from heartburn medicines,” he said.
“There are different types of medications that are able to decrease the symptoms of heartburn. When someone with heartburn comes into the office with symptoms like frequent heartburn, there may be a higher chance of experiencing side effects. The risk of side effects is very low, and people who take heartburn medication are more likely to suffer from it.”
A New England Journal of Medicine study in early August found that the drug was safe for people with a history of heartburn. The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, found that taking the drug increased the risk of heartburn by 23%, compared to taking an inactive medication.
